She describes T.E.A. as a small educational environment where students receive individualized and group instruction while developing academically, socially and personally. The school incorporates academics, enrichment, leadership, life skills, social skills, chapel and the arts.

Washington emphasized that the school’s goal is to meet students where they are academically and help move them forward.

A major part of Washington’s philosophy is understanding students rather than immediately reacting to their behavior. Drawing from her years as an educator, she explained that sometimes teachers have to “get on their level” and create an environment where students feel comfortable enough to communicate, ask questions and learn from their mistakes.

Washington shared her oldest son’s experience as an example of that philosophy. After noticing that he struggled in a traditional school environment despite being a strong student, she decided to move him to T.E.A. She said the change allowed him to receive an approach that better suited his personality and learning needs. According to Washington, he eventually went on to college and remained on the president’s list throughout his college career.

That philosophy is reflected in the experience of Nick, a T.E.A. student, who said the academy has helped him grow both academically and personally. Reflecting on his time in public school, Nick said he had struggled with anger and completing his work even though he was capable of doing it. At T.E.A., he said the experience has made him “a way better person.”

Nick also described leadership as helping others and standing up for people who need support.

He said he already helps teachers and classrooms around the school and would want to expand that involvement if given an SGA leadership position. Outside the classroom, Nick plays guitar and piano and hopes to pursue music in the future—another example of the talents T.E.A. seeks to nurture.

Washington’s own career has included work in education, radio, television and film, as well as her involvement with Alabama State University, Montgomery Job Corps Center and Central Alabama OIC. She said those experiences have all helped prepare her for the work she is doing at T.E.A. today.

For Washington, continuing that work is ultimately about making a difference. “Why retire when you can make a difference?” she said.

Her message to T.E.A. students centers on integrity, purpose and possibility. She encourages students to understand that their circumstances do not determine their future and that they should dream beyond where they began. Her definition of integrity is simple: “doing the right thing when nobody else is watching.”

Ultimately, Washington wants students to leave T.E.A. understanding that they matter, that they are capable of growth, and that their background does not have to limit what they become. Her philosophy—and Nick’s experience—illustrate the school’s emphasis on educating the whole student while helping young people discover their talents, develop leadership skills and prepare for life beyond the classroom.
